Question 407760: Hello, I really need your help, math is not my greatest subject. I am in college physics and I would love it if you could please help. It is a very long question...here goes:
A surveying team wishes to find the distance between a point (A) on one side of a sstream and a point (B) on the opposite bank. The surveyor sets thetransit over point A and backsights on point B. He then turns his transit through a 90 degree angle and foresights toward point C. The party sets point C at any convenient distance form A using a steel tape measures a distance of 801 feet. The surveyor sets the transit over point C baxksights on A and turns the telescope towards point B. He maeasures the angle bewteen his sighting on A and his sighting on B and finds that it is 28 degrees with this information what is the distance from point A to point B?..........sorry it is so long..... I thank you very much for your help...god bless

You can put this solution on YOUR website! He maeasures the angle bewteen his sighting on A and his sighting on B and finds that it is 28 degrees with this information what is the distance from point A to point B?..
:
It helps to draw a right triangle representing this.
:
Show the stream between A and B, C is on the same side of the stream as A
:
Angle A is given as 90 degrees, Angle C is given as 28 degrees
Side AC is given as 801 ft, we want to find side AB
:
We can use the tangent of C which is 28 degrees, Side adjacent = 801 ft
we want to find x, side opposite, which is AB, the distance across the stream
:
Tan(28) =
.5317 =
Multiply both sides by 801, results
801 * .5317 = x
x = 425.9 ft is the distance across the stream (AB)

Did I explain in a manner that made sense to you?
