Question 393303: A 25 meter long diagonal piece of wood runs across a rectangular platform that has a length-to-width ratio of 4:3. What are the dimensions of the platform. I was thinking that you have to set up a proportion like 4/3 = 25/x, but I'm not sure if this is correct or not.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! the diagonal is the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed by the length, width and diagonal
if the length-to-width ratio is 4:3, then the width-to-length-to-diagonal ratio is 3:4:5 (look familiar?)
if k is the proportionality constant (fudge factor),
then ___ 3k:4k:5k = W:L:25
