First of all, pi or is defined at the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. In other words pi=C/D. It's been known for many years that the size of the circle makes no difference, the ratio is constant and that constant has been DEFINED as pi. You can check the internet and learn about all the interesting characteristics and history of pi. Also, it can be readily shown that the area of a circle equals pi*(r^2) but you don't need to worry about that proof just yet. You do need to remember, however, that
To solve your problem, you don't need to do any figuring on pi. When the problem says to "write your answer in pi", its just telling you not to bother multiplying by 3.14159---------- which is an approximate value for pi
