M is the midpoint of line segment CD. Find the missing length.
CM=3x, CD= 8x-14, x=?
----------------------------
Draw the line segment CD.
Put M at the middle.
Do you see that CM + MD = CD ?
But M is the midpoint so CM = MD
Therefore 2(CM) = CD
----------------------
Substitute to get:
2(3x) = 8x-14
6x-8x = -14
-2x = -14
x = 7
