Question 1160145: I am having difficulty as to why all the multiple choice answers are not true for the following problem:
"Suppose line segments AB and CD have the same length. Which statements are expressed correctly?"
1). AB = CD (True)
2). Line segment AB = Line segment CD (False)
3). AB is congruent to CD (False)
4). Line segments AB and CD are congruent (False)
Since the segments have the same length, why are 2 and 3 false?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
It is because the person, who created answers to this multiple choice question, DOES NOT know Math.
What I can advise you ? --- Ignore everything you get from this source.
If you want to learn Math, use other sources.

At nova days, there are THOUSANDS of people in the Internet, who call, present and position
themselves as tutors, but in reality, know NOTHING in Math and absolutely unable to teach.
Unfortunately, nobody fights with them . . .
Actually, they are rogue and self-proclaimed persons.
But again, nobody fights with them . . .
Imagine for a minute, that the service, that takes out garbage in your city, stop working . . .
The same is in the Internet with such "quasi-" and "pseudo-" tutors.
To find a really good tutor is a really big problem . . .

The resource from which this problem comes apparently uses the convention that, when talking about a line segment AB, the notation "AB" means the LENGTH of line segment AB. So in this problem, given that "line segments AB and CD have the same length", the answer choices mean....
1) AB = CD
TRUE. This statement says that the LENGTHS of the two segments are the same, which is what the given information says.
2) Line segment AB = Line segment CD.
FALSE. This statement says the two LINE SEGMENTS are the same, which is not true. Their lengths are the same; but they are not the same line segment.
3) AB is congruent to CD
FALSE. This statement says the LENGTHS are congruent. That is not using the vocabulary correctly. It is correct to say that congruent line segments have the same length, or that their lengths are equal. It is not correct to say the lengths are congruent.
Said differently, line segments can be congruent, and their lengths can be equal; but their LENGTHS can't be CONGRUENT.
4) Line segments AB and CD are congruent
TRUE!!!!!
Saying the two line segments are congruent is EXACTLY the same thing as the given information that they have the same length.
I can't imagine ANY way to interpret the language which makes this one false....!
