Two supplementary angles are such that one is 15 times larger than the other. Find the two angles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you say " . . . 15 times larger than . . . ", you create an AMBIGUITY with the probability of 100%.
In English, ( in Math problems formulated in English language ), this / (such) set of words DOES NOT work.
When you formulate the problem in such a way, you demonstrate that
a) You are not familiar on how such problem are formulated in English;
and
b) You never read formulations of such problems NEITHER in school Math textbooks, NOR in the Internet.
Be careful (!) (!) (!)
And learn the subject, as well as the terminology, before formulating your problems.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = one of the supplementary angles.
y = the other supplementary angle.
since they are supplementary, then:
x + y = 180
if x is 15 times as large as y, then:
x = 15 * y
replace x with 15 * y to get
x + y = 180 becomes 15 * y + y = 180
combine like terms to get:
16 * y = 180
solve for y to get:
y = 180 / 16 = 11.25
that makes x = 180 - 11.25 = 168.75
you have x = 11.25 and y = 168.75
15 * 11.25 = 168.75
your solution is that x = 11.25 and y = 168.75 degrees.
i'm assuming you meant 15 times as large, rather than 15 * larger.
it's a matter of wording that can sometimes be confusing.
my understanding is that 15 times as large leads to x = 15 * y
my understanding is also that 15 times larger leads to x = y + 15 * y = 16 * y
i think you meant as large.
if you didn't, then you'll get a different answer as follows;
x + y = 180 becomes 16 * y + y = 180
combine like terms to get 17 * y = 180
solve for y to get:
y = 180 / 17 = 10.58823529.
my recommendation is to go with x = 15 times as large as y.
if that doesn't lead to the correct answer, then look at x = 15 times larger than y.
