EF+FG =EG or 8x-14+4x+1=59, 12x-13=59, 12x=72, x=6.
EF=8*6-14=34 and FG=4*6+1=25.

Hi there,
If EG = 59
Segment EF = 8x - 14
Segment FG = 4x + 1
(8x - 14) + (4x + 1) = 59
Remove brackets
8x - 14 + 4x + 1 = 59
Collect like terms:
8x + 4x = 59 + 14 - 1
12x = 72
x = 6
Segment EF = 8x - 14
Segment EF = 8(6) - 14
Segment EF = 48 - 14
Segment EF = 34
Segment FG = 4x + 1
Segment FG = 4(6) + 1
Segment FG = 24 + 1
Segment FG = 25.
