I assume you mean an American football, not a soccer ball.
Find the volume by measuring the amount of liquid it displaces.
Immerse it in a fish tank, for example.

To find its area, measure the distance L from end to end. Use a piece of string.
Measure the diameter to get the radius at the center, the "widest part." You can use a string again, measure the circumference and calculate the radius from that.
The surface area = 2*pi*r*L (one of the Theorems of Pappus)
