Could you explain  PLEASE  what is  "1  in. circle"  in your post ?

Is it the circle of radius  1  or the diameter  1 ?



It is not a way to formulate  Math problems as you do.

What diameter of 4 circles will fit into a 1 in. circle. Need formula to determine Diameter of inner circle given Diameter of outer circle and number of inner circles.

The largest diameter of the 4 circles of radius r is obtained when their centers form a square.
The distance from the center of the square to a circle's center is r*sqrt(2).
The radius of the outer circle is r*sqrt(2) + r.
