You started correctly by adding 5 to both sides of the inequality yielding y%3E-12, read "y is greater than -12" So the answer is NOT -12. In fact, -12 is not in the solution set to this inequality.

Since you have a "greater than" sign (as opposed to a "greater than or equal to" sign), you have to exclude the endpoint, namely -12, therefore on the number line graph you need an open circle. And if you need to express it in interval notation, you will need "(" as opposed to "[" to indicate exclusion of the endpoint.

Since "y is greater than -12" y can be ANYTHING larger. Larger on the number line is ALWAYS to the right. So on the number line you need an open circle at -12 and an arrow that goes to the right. For interval notation: (-12,infinity)
