The quadratic formula says:
If ax^2+bx+c=0
then x=[-b+-sqrt(b^2-4ac)]/(2a)

It is a means of determinaing the x-intercepts of a
quadratic function. Why?
At the x-intercepts the y-value is zero.
Therefore ax^2+bx+c=0
Therefore the quadratic formula tells you the x-values
that go with y=0.
