first distribute the x, put in standard form by move the 5 over to the right side and make the equation = 0;

Factor;
(2x + 5)(x+1)=0
make each =0
2x+5 = 0
2x = -5
x+=+-5%2F2
x+1=0
x=-1
so x = -1 or x+=+-5%2F2
