Question 384235: A path followed by the diver can be modeled by
h = -1/5(x2- 5x- 70)
where h is the height (in feet) and x is the horizontal distance (in feet) from the edge of the pool.How far from the edge of the pool is the

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A path followed by the diver can be modeled by
h = -1%2F5(x^2- 5x - 70)
where h is the height (in feet) and x is the horizontal distance (in feet) from the edge of the pool.
How far from the edge of the pool is the diver when he hits the water?
Answer in units of ft.
:
When he hits the water, h=0, therefore
-1%2F5(x^2- 5x - 70) = 0
multiply by -5
x^2 - 5x - 70 = 0
Will not factor, use the quadratic formula: a=1; b=-5; c=-70
the positive solution
x = 11.23 ft from the edge of the pool
