Question 370199: so. a stage in the park is being decorated for Veterans Day. The stage is rectangular and has an area of 450 square feet. is 80 feet of skirting enough to create a skirt for all four sides of the stage? please show how you came to the answer. thank you!(: Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
The largest area rectangle that you can have for a given perimeter is a square with sides that measure one-fourth of the perimeter. For an 80 foot perimeter, the largest possible area is a 20 by 20 foot square. Such a square has an area of 400 square feet -- smaller than the 450 square foot stage that you have. Given that the stage was square, the sides would measure the square root of 450, and 4 times the square root of 450 is approximately 85 feet and any other configuration of rectangle would have an even larger perimeter.
