Using the FOIL method,
%28a%2B4%29%5E2=%28a%2B4%29%28a%2B4%29
%28a%2B4%29%5E2=a%5E2%2B4a%2B4a%2B4%5E2
%28a%2B4%29%5E2=a%5E2%2B8a%2B4%5E2
There is a cross product term.
As an example,
%281%2B2%29%5E2=3%5E2=9
If we did it like you showed,
%281%2B2%29%5E2=1%2B4=5+
which is clearly incorrect.
