Call the smaller number x
given:

(2) y+=+3x+%2B+10

from (1)
(1) x+=+42+-+y
substitute in (2)
y+=+3%2A%2842+-+y%29+%2B+10
y+=+126+-+3y+%2B+10
4y+=+136
y+=+34
and from (2)
(2) y+=+3x+%2B+10
34+=+3x+%2B+10
3x+=+34+-+10
3x+=+24
x+=+8
The numbers are 34 and 8
