Framing a Painting Ali paints with watercolors on a sheet of paper 50 cm wide by 38 cm high.
He then places this sheet on a mat so that a uniformly wide strip of the mat shows all around the picture.
The perimeter of the mat is 256 cm.
How wide is the strip of the mat showing around the picture?
:
let x = the width of the strip around the picture
let L = the length of the mat
let w = the width of the mat
:
perimeter
2L + 2w = 256
divide equation by 2
L + w = 128
w = (128-L), use this form for substitution
:
Find the values using the picture dimensions
L-2x = 50
and
w-2x = 38
replace w with (128-L)
(128-L) - 2x = 38
-L - 2x = 38 - 128
-L - 2x = -90
L + 2x = 90
Subtract from the 1st equation
L - 2x = 50
L + 2x = 90
-------------Subtraction eliminates L, find x
0 - 4x = -40
x = -40/-4
x = 10 cm is the width around the picture

Let x be the width of the strip of mat around the picture.

Then the dimensions of the mat are (50+2x) cm by (38+2x) cm.

The perimeter of the mat (twice length plus twice width) is 256 cm:

2(50+2x)+2(38+2x)=256
100+4x+76+4x=256
8x=80
x=10

ANSWER: The strip is 10cm wide
