add 3/4 to both sides

Now take 1/2 of the coefficient of x, square it, and add to both sides

x%5E2+%2B+%281%2F2%29x+%2B+%281%2F16%29+=+13%2F16
%28x+%2B+%281%2F4%29%29%5E2+=+13%2F16
take the square root of both sides
x+%2B+%281%2F4%29+=+%2B+sqrt%2813%2F16%29

solve for x
