hello fellow imgurian, Mewmus here.
we start by taking ax^2 + bx + c = 0, standard form of quadratic formula
now, the second part, the quadratic formula:
x = -b +- sqrt of b^2 - 4(ac) divide the whole thing by 2a


your equation is 3k^2 - 1k - 9 = 0

this translates into k = -(-1) +- sqrt (-1)^2 - 4 (3)(-9) divide the whole thing by 2(3)


N will = 1
D will = 109
M will = 6
solutions are (according to algebra.com) k=1.90671775148509,k=-1.57338441815176
