with a negative leading coefficient, the graph of the parabola looks like an upside down 'U'

Downward because, as x gets larger and larger (positively or negatively)
the -16t^2 term grows more and more negative, thus causing the arms
of the parabola to go more and more negative negative, or DOWN.
