Question 263675: I don't understand how to do a percent word problem that has two percents in it. For example, Sally bought a coat for 60% off original sale price of $240, and sales tax of 6%. Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 60% off means the sale price was 40%
.40*240
Now the sales tax is 6% *.40*240
We were NOT asked for the final price nor for the sales tax.
again we add 6% so we want 106% which is 1.06
so we want .40*240 to get the sale price
but we have to ad d the sales tax
1.06*.40*240= final price=$101.76
.06*.40*240= sale's tax=$5.76
.40*240 is sale price $96
