Question 133196
Don't get discouraged. Many people have trouble with word problems. It is just a matter of practice.

Given: a rectangle has a length that is 2 inches longer then its width.
Let x = width. Then the length is {{{width + 2}}} = {{{(x+2)}}}

So we have Length = (x+2) and width = x

You are asked to find the perimeter P. The perimeter of a rectangle is (2 times the width) + (2 times the length). Just walk around the perimeter and verify you cover 4 sides (2 width, 2 length).

So
{{{P = 2length + 2width}}}
{{{P = 2(w+2) + 2w}}}
{{{P = 2w + 4 + 2w}}}
{{{P = 4w +4}}}
