Question 131147
one number is 6 less than a second number, twice the second number is 39 more than 5 times the second (YOU MUST MEAN FIRST NUMBER?????) number. find the two numbers

Let x=the second number
Then x-6=the first number

Now we are told that:

2x=5(x-6)+39  get rid of parens

2x=5x-30+39 subtract 5x from both sides
2x-5x=5x-5x-30+39  collect like terms

-3x=9 divide both sides by -3
x=-3---------------------second number

x-6=-3-6=-9----------------------first number

CK

2*(-3)=5*(-9)+39
-6=-45+39
-6=-6

Hope this helps---ptaylor
