Let x= the length of the Piece of wood
The first piece of rope, we are told,=3x-2
The second piece of rope, we are told,=3x+15

AND WE ARE TOLD THAT THE FIRST PIECE OF ROPE IS THE SAME LENGTH AS THE SECOND PIECE OF ROPE.  THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR PROBLEM.  3X-2 CANNOT EQUAL 3X+15.

CHECK THE WORDING OF YOUR PROBLEM.
