Question 121077
Question:

The sum of two numbers is 32. Their difference is 6. What are the two numbers?

Answer:

Assume that the numbers are x and y( Take x as the larger number).

Given, their sum is 32.

==> x + y = 32 -----------------(1)

Also given that their difference is 6.

==> x - y = 6 ------------------(2)

Add (1) and (2)

==> x + y + (x - y ) = 32 + 6

==> x + y + x - y  = 38

==> x  + x + y - y = 38

==> 2x = 38

Divide both sides by 2.

==> {{{ 2x/2 = 38/2}}}

==> x = 19

So the larger number is 19.

So the other number is 32-19

==> y = 13

So the numbers are 19 and 13.

Hope you found the explanation useful.
