Question 94042
<pre>
I am having trouble with solving by substitution. Please help.

5x-2y=-5
y-5x=3

How is it possible for the following solutions by the other person, to be correct?
"So the solution is, x = 1 and y = 8"

If these "respondents" are not committed to helping these people by correctly solving these problems, then just leave them
alone, and move ALONG!! Obviously, they're not helping, but compounding these people's problems with math, making it
worse for those who desperately need help, and are expecting to get GENUINE, NOT SUBSTANDARD help.

And, how can the "respondent" ask the question, "Hope you found the explanation useful," when it's filled with MANY ERRORS,
and the solutions prove the equations FALSE, therefore making the solutions, obviously BOGUS?

                  5x - 2y = - 5 ---- eq (i)
                    y - 5x = 3_____y = 3 + 5x ----- eq (ii)
      5x - 2(3 + 5x) = - 5 ----- Substituiting 3 + 5x for y in eq (i)
           5x - 6 - 10x = - 5
                5x - 10x = - 5 + 6
                        - 5x = 1
                           {{{highlight(x = 1/(- 5) = - 1/5)}}}

                            {{{y = 3 + 5(- 1/5)}}} ---- Substituting {{{- 1/5}}} for x in eq (ii)
                             y = 3 - 1 = 2

Solution set: {{{highlight(system(x = - 1/5, y = 2))}}}

You can do the CHECK!!</font></font></font></b></pre>
