If <font color=red size=4>k = 0</font>, then the x^2 term in the 1st equation goes away. This leaves us with two linear equations. They may or may not intersect. If they do intersect, then you'll have exactly one solution.

Hint: parallel lines have equal slopes but different y-intercepts.
