Question 114913
Why are there usually two solutions in quadratic equations?
<pre><font face = "book antiqua" size = 5 color = "darkred"><b>
Because the ± in the quadratic formula

{{{x = (-b +- sqrt( b^2-4ac ))/(2a) }}}

will result in two solutions, one for the + and
one for the - except when {{{b^2-4ac}}} = 0

Zero is the only number which does not have two
distinct square roots.
