Question 1195139
.
Ruel can bike 5 kph faster than Greg. At noon, each boy leaves his
house and travels towards each other. If the distance between their
houses is 15 kilometers and they meet in 30 minutes, what is each
boy's rate?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
x = Greg's biking rate, in km/h.
(x+5) = Ruel biking rate, km/h.
Write the total distance equation
    0.5x + 0.5*(x+5) = 15 kilometers.
Simply and find x
    0.5x + 0.5x + 2.5 = 15
         x            = 15 - 2.5
         x            = 12.5.
ANSWER. Greg's rate is 12.5 km/h;  Ruel's rate is 12.5 + 5 = 17.5 km/h.
CHECK.  0.5*(12.5 + 17.5) = 0.5*30 = 15 kilometers, total distance.   ! Correct !
