An equation written in the post by @josgarithmetic is IRRELEVANT to the posed problem.

            It is WRONG SETUP, so ignore it.

            I came to bring a correct solution.

Let " n " be the number to find.

Write equation as you read the problem

    3*(n-3) = n + 7.

Simplify and find n

    3n - 9 = n + 7,

    3n - n = 7 + 9

       2n  =  16

        n  = 16/2 = 8.

ANSWER. The sought number is 8.

Solved.
