Question 112167
Penny collected some change in preparation for a garage sale.
She collected two more nickels than twice the number of dimes and
eight fewer quarters than twice the number of nickels.
-------------
Let the number of dimes be "x"; value of these is 10x cents
# of nickels is 2x+2 : value of these is 5(2x+2)=10x+10 cents
# of quarters is 2(2x+2)-8 = 4x-4;Value of these is 25(4x-4)=100x-100 cents
-------------
if the value of quarters was $1.60 greater than four times the value of nickels and dimes together,
what was the total value of the change that penny collected.

EQUATION:
quarter value - 160 = 4(nickel value + dime value)
100x-100-160 = 4(10x+10+10x)
100x-260 = 80x+40
20x= 300
x = 15 (# of dimes)
10x = 150 cents (value of dimes)
10x+10 = 150+10 = 160 cents (value of nickels)
100x-100 = 100*15+100 =1600 cents (value of quarters)
-------------
Total Value = 150+160+1600 = 1910 cents = $19.10
