Question 1178235
<br>
Given that the mother was twice as old as her son 5 years ago, I would set up the problem using<br>
x = son's age 5 years ago
2x = mother's age 5 years ago<br>
6 years from now is 11 years after 5 years ago, so....<br>
x+11 = son's age 6 years from now
2x+11 = mother's age 6 years from now<br>
The sum of their ages 6 years from now is 82:<br>
{{{(x+11)+(2x+11) = 82}}}
{{{3x+22 = 82}}}
{{{3x = 60}}}
{{{x = 20}}}<br>
Their ages 5 years ago were 20 and 40.
Their ages now are 25 and 45.
Their ages 6 years from now will be 31 and 51.<br>
It's not clear from your post which "number" you wanted....<br>
