Question 110118
A proportion is a comparison of ratios.
It is an equation that states that two ratios are {{{equal}}}, such as

{{{4/8 = 1/2}}}

Proportions always have an {{{EQUAL}}} sign!
A proportion can be written in {{{two}}} ways:

{{{4/8 = 1/2}}} or {{{4 : 8 = 1 : 2}}}

you read them: "4 is to 8 as 1 is to 2"
In each proportion the{{{ first}}} and {{{last}}} term (here 4 and 2) are called the {{{extremes}}}.

The {{{second}}} and {{{third}}} terms (here 8 and 1) are called the {{{means}}}.

In simple proportions, {{{all_ you_ need_ to _do}}} is examine if the fractions {{{both _reduce_ to _the _same _value}}}; if yes, then the proportion is {{{true}}}.

{{{4/8 = 1/2}}}…this is a true proportion, since both fractions reduce to 1/2.

In simple proportions, you can {{{use_ this_ same_ approach}}} when solving for a missing part of a proportion.

Remember that both fractions must reduce to the same value
{{{4/8 = x/2}}}

{{{4*2= x*8}}}

{{{8 = x*8}}}……….{{{x=1}}}
