Lets define a "part" here as a pint. (But we could just as easily define a "part" as a quart or a gallon or any liquid measure, for that matter).

6 gal=6*8=48 pints

Now we know that 50 pints is to 1 pint as 48 pints is to x.  This is normally written as follows:

50/1=48/x  multiply both sides by x (or cross-multiply)
50x=48  divide both sides by 50

x=0.96 pints

I would round it off to a pint!
