Hi,
     *[illustration rectangle.png].
The length of the batter's box on a softball field is 1ft more than twice the width (x).
The area of the pool is 78 ft^2. |Note the use of '' ^ ''
w is x
L is (2x+1)
A = Lw
78ft^2 = (2x + 1)(x)
2x^2  + x - 78 = 0
Solving using the Pythagorean Theorem
 {{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 1+624))/(4) }}}  (tossing out negative solution for length)
{{{x =( -1 + sqrt(625))/4 = (-1 + 25)/4 = 24/4 = 6}}}
x = 6ft  the width of the batter's box
L = 2x +x = 13ft
Checking our Answer
6ft*13ft =78ft^2
