Question 1165138
Faulty problem description....
"Bernard is 5 times older than Victor" means Bernard's age is Victor's age, PLUS 5 times Victor's age -- i.e., 6 times Victor's age. Then
x = Peter's age
x+5 = Victor's age (5 years older than Peter)
6(x+5) = Bernard's age
The sum of their ages is 65 years:
{{{x+(x+5)+(6(x+5)) = 65}}}
{{{x+x+5+6x+30 = 65}}}
{{{8x = 30}}}
{{{x = 3.75}}}
Solutions to age problems have to be whole numbers....
If you want, you can use work similar to that shown above to solve the REAL problem -- in which Bernard is 5 times AS OLD AS Victor, instead of 5 times OLDER.
