Question 1155963
A fish tank weighs 11.5 pounds when it is 1/8 full of water and 34 pounds when it is 3/4 full.
How much does the empty tank {{{highlight(cross(way))}}} <U>weight</U>?
This is a fraction word problem I am having trouble with. Please help. Thank you.

<pre>
The difference {{{3/4}}} of the tank volume minus {{{1/8}}} of the tank volume weights 34 - 11.5 = 22.5 pounds.

Again:

    {{{(3/4)*V}}} - {{{(1/8)*V}}} = 22.5 pounds,

Multiply everything by 8

     6V - 1V = 180

     5V      = 180

      V      = {{{180/5}}} = 36.

So, the weight of water, filled the full tank, is 36 pounds.

Hence, {{{3/4}}} volume of water in the tank weights {{{(3/4)*36}}} = 3*9 = 27 pounds.

It implies, that the emty tank weights  34 - 27 = 7 pounds.    <U>ANSWER</U>
