For the first part, do you have to use EACH of the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 exactly once?<br>
And the sentence describing the second part is not proper English, so we would have to guess its meaning.<br>
(2) I very much dislike this kind of problem.  Solving this kind of problem involves random guessing of how to put the numbers and operations together; random guessing teaches no useful problem-solving skills.<br>
It does give you practice in evaluating expressions using correct order of operations; but those skills can be practiced with much more interesting problems.
