Question 1133203
Algebra....
let x be the number of burgers; then x-2 is the number of drinks. The total, at $3.25 per burger and $1.50 per drink, is $49.25:
{{{3.25(x)+1.50(x-2) = 49.25}}}
Solve the equation using basic algebra.
Using logic and mental arithmetic....
(1) Imagine ordering 2 more drinks, at $1.50 each, making the number of drinks equal to the number of burgers, and making the new total $52.25.
(2) One drink and one burger together cost $4.75. Do the mental arithmetic to see that the number of burgers and drinks that costs $52.25 is 11. (i.e., calculate 52.25/4.75 = 11)
(3) So the number of burgers is 11; take away those 2 other drinks that the coach didn't really order, and the number of drinks is 11-2 = 9.
