Question 105677
For this problem we will represent the larger number as x.
Therefore the smaller number is x-2.

{{{x-2 = 1/2 x - 1}}}
add 2 to both sides
{{{x = 1/2 x +1}}}
multiply 2 to both sides
{{{2x = 2(1/2x + 1)}}}
{{{2x = x+2}}}
subtract x from both sides
{{{x = 2}}}
therefore the numbers are 0 & 2

If you take 1/2 of 2, you get 1. 1 less than 1 is 0.
0 and 2 are 2 consecutive even numbers.

The previous answer does is not correct as it does not solve the problem.
if you take 1/2 of 6 you get 3, 1 less than 3 is 2. 2 & 6 are not two consecutive even numbers.
