Question 1125946
<br>
The algebraic solution shown by the other tutor is fine... but it's a lot of work....<br>
Here is a method for finding the answer that is much less work.<br>
Since the speed of the plane is 8 times the speed of the train, the time required by the train is 8 times the time required by the plane. Then, since the difference in times is 8 3/4 hours,<br>
let x = time required by the plane to travel the 1050 miles
then 8x = time required by the train<br>
Then<br>
{{{8x-x = 8+3/4= 35/4}}}
{{{7x = 35/4}}}
{{{x = (35/4)/7 = 5/4}}}<br>
The plane takes 5/4 hours to travel the 1050 miles.
So the train takes 8*(5/4) = 10 hours.
So the speed of the train is 1050/10 = 105mph.
