Add the width of the walkway to <i>each side</i> of the dimensions of the playground.  That is, increase each of the dimensions by 8.  This will give you the dimensions of the rectangle describing the outer edge of the walkway.


Calculate the area (length times width) of the large rectangle, then calculate the area of the playground.  Subtract the area of the playground from the area of the large rectangle.
