Question 1117265
There is no way to interpret the problem the way tutor addingup did.
The USUAL way to interpret the problem is the way tutor ikleyn did:
"the square root of 6 more than 3 times the number is 6" --> "the square root of (6 more than 3 times the number) is 6" --> {{{sqrt(6+3x) = 6}}}
That equation leads easily to the "nice" answer x=10.
HOWEVER...
English is not tutor ikleyn's first language. She likes to say that any answer other than hers is WRONG; but many times that is not correct.
In fact the poor wording of this question allows the interpretation that the equation is
"the square root of 6 more than 3 times the number is 6" --> "(the square root of 6) more than (3 times the number) is 6" --> {{{3x+sqrt(6) = 6}}}
This of course is a different equation that leads to a different solution.
{{{3x+sqrt(6) = 6}}}
{{{3x = 6-sqrt(6)}}}
{{{x = 2-sqrt(6)/3}}}
Since this answer is less "pleasant" than the answer obtained with the other interpretation, it is highly probable that the other interpretation was intended.
However, both interpretations are grammatically valid....
