Here is another way you can solve this problem.  If you are good with mental arithmetic, it is much faster than the algebraic solution shown by the other tutor.<br>
This alternate method is based on the fact that, since the distances are the same, the ratio of the speeds is the reciprocal of the ratio of the times.<br>
The ratio of the two speeds is 55:40 = 11:8; so the ratio of times is 8:11.<br>
4.75 hours is 19/4 hours; 19/4 divided in the ratio 8:11 is 8/4=2 hours and 11/4 hours.<br>
Then the driving distance can be found using the time and rate for the trip in either direction:
55 mph times 2 hours = 110 miles
40 mph times 11/4 hours = 110 miles
