Question 97011
Rita Rowen can paddle her canoe up river at 3 miles per hour and she can paddle her canoe down the river at 9 miles per hour. She started from her home and paddled up stream to the ice cream parlor and immediately realizes she forgot her money. So she then paddled back home (downstream), If the entire trip, up stream and back took her 8 hours, how far up stream was the ice cream parlor from her home?
-----------------
Up-river DATA:
rate = 3 mph; distance = x miles ; time = d/t = x/3 hours
------------
Down-river DATA:
rate = 3 mph; distance = x miles ; time = x/3 hours
----------
EQUATION:
time + time = 8 hrs.
x/3 + x/3 = 8
(2/3)x = 8
x = 12 miles (distance to the ice cream parlor)
