He then spent half of what he had left on 2 magazines.

<pre>
Let M be the money Silvio had before he started shopping.

In the sport shop he spent {{{M/2 +5}}} dollars.
Hence, after the sport shop he had {{M - (M/2+5)}}} = {{{M/2-5}}} dollars.

He then spent {{{(1/2)*(M/2-5)}}} = {{{M/4-5/2}}} dollars on 2 magazines.
After that he had {{{(M/2-5) - (M/4-5/2)}}} = {{{M/4 - 5/2}}} dollars.

Then Silvio spent half of that on food, i.e. he spent {{{(1/2)*(M/4-5/2)}}} = {{{M/8 - 5/4}}} dollars on food.

After that he had {{{(M/4-5/2) - (M/8-5/4)}}} = {{{M/8 - 5/4}}}.

It is exactly $2, so you have an equation

{{{M/8-5/4}}} = 2.

----> Multiply by 8 both sides. You will get

M - 10 = 16.

Hence, M = 10 + 16 = 26 dollars.

<U>Answer</U>. Silvio had $26 before he started shopping.
