Question 1076997

How do I use the elimination method to solve this problem?

3x^2+4y^2=48
2x^2-y^2=-1
<pre>{{{3x^2 + 4y^2 = 48}}} ------ eq (i)
{{{2x^2 - y^2 = -1}}} ------ eq (ii)
Multiply eq (ii) by 4 to get eq (iii)
Add eqs (iii) & (i) to eliminate {{{y^2}}}
You'll get 2 values for x. Likewise, you'll get 2 values for y when you substitute each of the 2 x-values into any of the 2 original equations.
That's how simple this is.
NEVER follow any of the other "respondent's" suggestions, unless you want to CONFUSE yourself and/or wish to spend a lot of time doing a ton of work.
