Question 1074131
I agree that 56 square pieces of fabric are needed. However, as I got to the end, I realized that the calculation was not necessary. Towards the end of the story we find that Doris buys large pieces of fabric that she can cut into 8 squares, so after multiplying times 8, we divide by 8 to find she needs to buy 7 of those large pieces of fabric.

The way I understand it, the square pieces used to make the scarves measure {{{1/4}}} yard wide by {{{1/4}}} yard long, and Doris can buy large pieces of fabric that are {{{1/4}}} yard by {{{2}}} yards.
Each of those large pieces will give her {{{8}}} square scarf pieces
(2 yards divided by 1/4 yard is 8 squares).
That is exactly what Doris needs to make one scarf.
So each large, {{{1/4 }}} yard by {{{2}}} yards piece of fabric Doris buys will be enough material for one scarf.
For 7 scarves she needs to buy 7 of those large pieces of fabric.
