If he got done 3/4 of the job, then he has 1/4 left to do.  If it took 2 and 1/8 hours to do three of the four parts of the job, then the time to do one of the four parts must be one-third of 2 and 1/8 hours.  Divide 2 and 1/8 by 3 and then add the result to 2 and 1/8.
