Question 93552
<pre><font size = 5 face = "lucida console" color = "darkblue"><b>
Could anyone let me know if I have done this
problem correct?
A gold bracelet is discounted at 40% and sold
for $750. Find the regular price of the bracelet.
I have it being $1050.00

-----------------------

Let's check that answer and see if it's correct:

Let regular price = $1050.00
Multiply by .40, get $420
Subtract from regular price, get $1050 - $420
Set that equal to selling price:

$1050 - $420 = $750
        $630 = $750

Nope! 'fraid that's wrong!

-------------------------------------------

Let's do it correctly, exactly the same way
we checked your answer above, but this time
we'll using $x instead

Let regular price = $x
Multiply by .40, get $.40x
Subtract from regular price, $x - $.40x
Set that equal to selling price:

$x - $.40x = $750

Now solve for x:

Multiply through by 10

10x - 4x = 7500
      6x = 7500
       x = 1250

So the correct answer is $1250.00

Solving a word problem is exactly like checking an
answer in it to see if it is correct, only you use
x instead of the number you're checking, and at the
end you solve for x.
